India is one of the largest producers and consumers of sugar, supporting an enormous number of jobs. Simultaneously, the process of sugar production is marred with a number of socio-environmental challenges.

Within India, Uttar Pradesh is the largest producer of sugar.

Marginal and small farmers

For a majority of majority and small farmers, sugarcane cultivation is crucial because it is their primary source of income.

Farmers, surveyed for the Human Cost of Sugar study, report a variety of problems which plague their work.


Women in cane farming

Women farmers, with or without land ownership, have limited decision making powers. They contribute to the farming process through their labour during the sowing and harvesting seasons. Only when male members are absent in the family do women take up a more proactive role.
