Farm workers within the sugarcane supply chain

The range of actors involved in the sugarcane chain, from farm to mill is huge. and includes farmers, farm workers, sugar mills, traders, cane societies, Cane Development & Sugar Industry Department, companies buying sugar, certification bodies, civil society organisations and trade unions.

In Uttar Pradesh, farmers generally do not document the wages for the farm workers employed. Wages vary between ₹ 200 to ₹ 400 for men and ₹ 80 to ₹ 200 for women as against the state government specified minimum wages of ₹ 293, ₹ 322 and ₹ 361 for unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled workers respectively.
